Boats came out in Prayagraj city on Tuesday after Ganga waters breached its bank and engulfed low lying areas. It is estimated that at least 1200 houses were submerged prompting residents to shift to flood relief camps. DM Bhanu Chandra Goswami has issued instructio­ns to police officials to keep a strict watch on the villages and colonies evacuated following the floods to check incidents of theft.

PRAYAGRAJ/VARANASI : With rivers breaching the danger mark flood water entered many colonies in Prayagraj and Varanasi on Tuesday. In Prayagraj, it is estimated that at least 1200 homes are affected and the numbers may increase. Many residents have been evacuated to safer places and flood relief camps but many are still at their residence and are trying to save their household goods. The families which have shifted to relief camps fear that their houses may be burgled. District magistrate Bhanu Chandra Goswami on Tuesday held a meeting with the officials of the department­s concerned and reviewed the flood preparatio­ns. The DM said electricit­y supply, drinking water and facility of toilets should be maintained at the relief camps.

In Varanasi, the Central Water Commission said the Ganga was flowing at 71.11 metres and is likely to cross the danger mark (71.26 metre) during the night. Rising water has flooded all the ghats and entered into Nagwan, Samne Ghat, Maruti Nagar, and Dashashwam­edh Ghat, while the road leading to Godaulia intersecti­on from Dashashwam­edh Ghat is slowly flooding too. Nakkhi Ghat, Saraiya, Purana Pul, Bhelwaria along the Varuna are also flooded, and people have been shifted to safer locations. Uttar Pradesh urban developmen­t minister Ashutosh Tandon, minister in-charge of Varanasi, along with DM and other officials conducted an inspection of the flood-affected areas and also visited flood relief camp and met people there.
