Odd-even begins today, brace for traffic problems at Delhi border
NOIDA: The Delhi-Noida borders may see traffic issues on Monday as the Delhi government re-launches the Odd-Even scheme, aimed to curb pollution. While the scheme is not applicable in Noida, commuters going towards Delhi may face problems as there is no parking arrangement/space at the borders.
Anil Kumar Jha, SP (traffic) Noida, said Odd-Even applied to commuters in Delhi only. “This rule is not applicable in Noida. Though the Noida traffic police will deploy personnel at Kalindi Kunj, Noida Entry gate in Sector 14 and Delhi-Noida-Direct (DND) Flyway on Monday but enforcement of this scheme will be done by Delhi traffic police,” he said.
Noida residents going towards Delhi without compliance of the scheme may have to face fines or return home.
Anurag Kulshrestha, president of Road Safety NGO TRAX, said the scheme encourages people to use public transport systems, which can help lessen pollution. “However, the government has given a lot of exemptions. This would yield good results if this was implemented for motorcycles riders as well,” he said. Kulshrestha said the Delhi government had made prior announcements about this scheme but there are still some people, especially from the Delhi’s satellite towns, who are not aware of its implementation.
Data from the transport dept shows the district has 6.67 lakh registered vehicles. According to an estimate by the Noida traffic police, around 3.5 lakh people commute between Noida and Delhi every day.
