Ashish, Rupal win gold medals for UP in Jr national athletics

LUCKNOW:On a day when as many as four nationals records were set up in different age categories on Sunday, young Ashish Kumar and Rupal won gold medals for Uttar Pradesh on the second day of the 35th National Junior Athletics Championsh­ips at the Acharya Nagarjuna University campus at Guntur.

Ritik Malik (Delhi), Shaili Singh (Karnataka), Chanda (Delhi) and Nivya Antony (Kerala) set new national records in the boys under-18 100m, girls under-16 long jump, girls under-20 1500m and girls under-20 pole vault respective­ly.

Ashish in discus throw event in boys under-18 category finished top, hurling the iron plate to a distance of 56.63 metre. Punjab’s Harnoor Singh Sandhu and Uttarakhan­d’s Satyan Singh finished with silver and bronze medals, respective­ly.

Rupal won the second gold for UP, clocking 55.37 seconds to finish top in the 400m event in the girls under-16 category. She pushed Riya Nitin Patil of Maharashtr­a and Pon Siva Priyaa of

Tamil Nadu to the second and third spots respective­ly.

Another boy from Uttar Pradesh, farman Ali got a bronze medal in the 10000m walk race in the boys under-20, clocking 43:31.31 seconds, whereas in the girls under-20, Manisha Kushwaha of UP bagged a silver medal, clocking 55.43 seconds in 400 metre.

Adhish Ghildiyal won a bronze medal for UP in shot put in boys under-18 category with a throw of 18.46 metre, where in
