WHAT’S THE DEAL ALL ABOUT?
Here’s a close look at the genesis of the Paris Agreement and why it’s important
HISTORIC ACCORD The Paris Agreement is a deal within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that deals with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance. At COP21 in Paris, on December 12, 2015, parties to the UNFCCC struck the historic deal
‘TEMPERATURE GOAL’ The agreement's long-term ‘temperature goal’ is to keep the increase in average global temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels; and to pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C
REDUCE RISKS & IMPACT
The accord’s goals would reduce the risks and impact of climate change
RESPONSIBILITIES
Each country must determine, plan and report on the contribution that it undertakes to mitigate global warming
CLIMATE ‘FINANCE’
An element of the deal says rich countries must help poor countries by providing "climate finance" to switch to renewable energy
WHY THE DEAL IS SPECIAL For the first time in history, an agreement unites all the world's countries in a single deal on tackling climate change
