LUCKNOW : Uttar Pradesh principal secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi, along with DM Abhishek Prakash and SSP Kalanidhi Naithani, conducted surprise inspection in the Lucknow district jail on Sunday. The objective of the inspection was to find out new ways to improve the condition of the Jail.

Awasthi, who inspected the jail hospital first, proposed to upgrade the hospital with new machines and facilities.

“We are planning to introduce the latest equipment in the hospital of the jail, such as ultrasound and digital x-ray machines. Till now, inmates have to visit civil hospital (over 23 kilometers far from the jail) to avail these facilities,” he said. Principal secretary asked the jail authorities to submit a proposed budget within next fortnight for setting up the machine at the hospital.

The officers also visited the barracks, offices and reviewed the existing facilities at the jail. Awasthi directed the DM to formulate terms of a contract with the local municipality to maintain cleanliness inside the jail.

He advised to improve the facility of video conferencing, increase the number CCTV cameras (upto 200) in the jail, besides keeping the feed of the CCTV cameras at least for 60 days before it was deleted.

The senior prison superintendent, NK Pandey tried to convince officials that there was no personal complaint from the staff members in writing. Awasthi, however, asked the superintendent to submit a report on the individual complaints of the female inmates. He also stressed on the need to ensure better condition of infants of female inmates and ordered to make arrangements for toys and designate play area for them inside the prison.

Though the inspecting officials did not find any objectionable material inside the jail premises. Yet, Awasthi asked the jail administration to ensure that illegal mobile phones were not smuggled or used in the jail.

He also asked to make arrangement for a sewage treatment plant (STP) to manage the solid waste produced in the prison and directed officials to take suggestion from experts in this regard, besides he asked the prison superintendent to review the compensation given to the inmates.
