LUCKNOW: After a Delhi court awarded life imprisonment to expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar in Unnao rape case, the survivor expressed happiness that justice had prevailed. However, she is upset at thought that she lost four members of her family in the battle for justice.

Four-time MLA Sengar, convicted for raping the 16-year-old girl, was sentenced to life in jail by a Delhi Court on Friday. “Till a few months back, I had lost hope as we had written from the daroga (sub-inspector) to chief justice of India (CJI) but all to no avail,” said the survivor.

Only recently was she discharged from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, where she had been undergoing treatment for the life-threatening injuries she sustained in a road accident on July 28.

After the July 28 road mishap, in which she lost two aunts and her advocate suffered critical injuries and who continues to be admitted in AIIMS, the Supreme Court had intervened and shifted the matter to New Delhi. The survivor said, “I kept losing family members but people stood by me. The accused is mighty and the fight for justice against him was painful. I lost my father, two aunts and grandmother and using his influence, he put my uncle behind bars.”

She added, “We were alone. I am thankful to all those who stood by me. Had not the Supreme Court intervened, justice would have continued to remain elusive.”

On being asked whether she was satisfied with the quantum of punishment, she said, “I am not satisfied because I will not get my father and other family members back. But yes, he is punished for his misdeeds and the trial is on in other cases too. I am hopeful that he will get maximum punishment for his deeds.”

On the acquittal of Shashi Singh (a co-accused in the case, who allegedly took the victim to Sengar’s house), she said, “What can I say?” The survivor’s sister, said, “We are happy that the court considered maximum sentence for Sengar. We are only worried about our safety. I hope it will be taken care of.”

Her mother said, “I am sure, he will punished for the murder of my husband.”
