VARANASI: The group of 51 professors who carried out a signature drive against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in BHU was reportedly dubbed as ‘urban naxals’ by some unidentified elements on Thursday.

The miscreants pasted carbon copies of paper signed by the professors at a few locations inside BHU campus, with ‘urban naxals’ written on them.

A similar copy was pasted at the lecture theatre complex gate in the faculty of Social Sciences.

BHU public relations officer Dr Rajesh Singh, however, said he was not aware of any such activity.

These 51 professors had carried out a signature drive on Wednesday and appealed to the government to rethink about the long term implications of CAA and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Prof RP Pathak, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, BHU, who was also a part of the drive, had on Wednesday linked CAA to NRC and said they were against the idea of India.

“This is completely against the spirit of freedom struggle and the idea of a pluralist democracy. This is not acceptable in the land of Gandhi and

Tagore,” Pathak said. PM Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah have said the NRC was not linked to the CAA and that the two posed no threat to citizenship of Indian Muslims.

Pathak further alleged that an attempt to divide the society on communal lines was being made so that the real issues affecting common man took a backseat.

Another professor, who didn’t wish to be named, also urged the government to rethink about the implications.
