ALIGARH: The Rapid Action Force has filed a complaint against 1,000 unnamed Aligarh Muslim University students in connection with the violence on the campus on December 15, a senior police official said. The case was registered earlier on December 24 for damages caused to the RAF in action on the night of December 15 when police assistance was sought by the AMU administration.

There was some confusion about number of unidentified people booked, as earlier it was said to be 10,000 but later SSP Aligarh Aakash Kulhari clarified that the number of unidentified students booked was actually 1,000.

“There was a clerical mistake in the report, case was registered against 1,000 students and not 10,000,” senior superintendent of police (SSP) Akash Kulhari said.

To recall, AMU students had been peacefully protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act till their protest turned violent on December 15. Aligarh police released videos showing that it was AMU students who barged through Bab-e-Syed Gate and pelted security forces, including Aligarh police and RAF, with stones.

“The Rapid Action Force, as per procedure, had listed the damages caused to it in action on the night of December 15 in the report lodged at Civil Lines police station,” informed Amit Kumar, incharge at Civil Lines police station in Aligarh.

Two companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deputed at AMU circle after the situation became tense in wake of protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by AMU students.

To control the agitated students, tear gas shells were fired and both students and cops were injured in the clash.
