LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh police have been put on alert in view of the violence at anti-CAA protest sites in New Delhi and Aligarh during last three days, said officials.
UP’s officiating director general of police (DGP) HC Awasthi said UP districts bordering Delhi -- Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad -- had been sealed and only restricted traffic flow after proper verification was being allowed.
He said extra police force had been deployed at the two districts to ensure that violence did not spread to these districts.
He said since commissioner system existed in Gautam Budh Nagar, an Inspector General (IG) of Police rank officer had been posted there as commissioner, who was supervising the situation. He said IG, Meerut Range, Praveen Kumar had been stationed in Ghaziabad to examine the situation and make necessary arrangements to avert any trouble or fallout of Delhi antiCAA violence.
The top cop said barricades had been put on the Delhi border and people entering the state were being watched. He said officials had been directed to question people if their activities were found to be suspicious.
Awasthi said additional director general (ADG) of Agra zone Ajay Anand had been asked to camp in Aligarh to ensure no fresh trouble was caused there, for which additional police force had been deployed. He said the alert had also been sounded in Aligarh’s adjoining districts, including Bulandshahr, Kasganj, Budaun, Hathras, Etah and Mathura. He said police officials had been told to stay vigilant and sternly handle the trouble makers .
“In Lucknow, patrolling is been done round the clock at the Clock Tower where people are staging anti-CAA protest for over past one month now. So far no trouble has been caused in Lucknow but alert has been sounded in wake of Delhi and Aligarh violence,” he said. Another senior police official said precautionary measures were being taken as anti CAA protest had led to major violence in as many as 15 districts of the state, causing at least 20 deaths in eight districts between December 19 and 26.
