LUCKNOW : The statewide tally of Covid-19 patients increased to 1,986 on Monday with 113 more people testing positive for the coronavirus across Uttar Pradesh, according to health department data.

The state has reported 31 deaths till now, including 10 from Agra, six from Moradabad, five from Meerut, three from Kanpur and one each from Basti, Varanasi, Shravasti, Firozabad, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, and Lucknow. Till now, 399 patients have been discharged from hospital.

The reason for 31 deaths was that patients arrived late in hospital and a majority of them had other diseases too (co-morbidity), principal secretary, health and family welfare, Amit Mohan Prasad said at a press conference in the state capital.

Rather than hiding, people should come forward voluntarily for a test if they had symptoms of the coronavirus infection, he said. Prasad also said people should understand that there was no stigma attached to the infection. Test and treatment were free in hospitals, he added.

He also said only 15 patients were on oxygen support and none of the infected patients was on ventilator.

The patients’ localities were sanitized and the health department had collected samples of their close contacts, he said.

The principal secretary also said district committees had been constituted in all 75 districts of the state to check the spread of infection in hospitals. An officer of the rank of additional chief medical officer (ACMO) will chair the committee in each district. The superintendents of district hospitals/ women’s hospitals, WHO and Unicef representatives in the districts, as well as a State Pollution Control Board officer posted in the respective districts will be the committee members.

The committee members will train the staff of 10 big private hospitals in major districts and the staff of five hospitals in smaller districts for protection from infection, he said.

The members of the committee will check if all the hospitals were following the Covid protocol announced by the state government, he said.
