PRAYAGRAJ: An expectant mother, who along with her migrant husband was returning to her hometown Varanasi from Gujarat by a Shramik special train amid lockdown, gave birth to twins on board the train but both the babies died within hours of birth on Friday, officials said.

As per reports, eight-month pregnant Gayatri Devi, 21, and her husband Bhaiya Lal undertook the journey from Vapi to their hometown.

She gave birth to twin boys in the moving train somewhere after the train crossed Bharwari in Kaushambi district.

As soon as the authorities got the news, the Shramik special train was made to stop at Sirathu railway station and the mother and her twins were rushed to primary health centre (PHC) of Sirathu in an ambulance.

However, both the twins did not survive although doctors managed to save the mother who has been admitted to an isolation ward at Kaushambi district hospital.

“The woman was brought along with her newborns and as it was a premature delivery, both the kids were underweight. We found one had died before reaching the district hospital after being referred by PHC doctors while the other was alive but by the time we could give him oxygen support, he too breathed his last”, said chief medical superintendent (CMO) of the district hospital of Kaushambi, Dr Deepak Seth.

Gayatri and her husband, a native of village Guruvat under Cholapur police of Varanasi, were travelling in 09505 Shramik special moving from Vapi to Mau.

“We got the news and the train was stopped at Sirathu where she was brought down along with the newborn and was sent to Sirathu PHC in an ambulance,” said head constable, RPF, Amodh Singh posted at Sirathu station.
