AMID KANPUR SPURT, 174 NEW CASES IN STATE

LUCKNOW/KANPUR: Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday reported 174 new coronaviru­s cases taking the state’s tally of infected patients to 8,903, while two more deaths raised the toll to 231. Migrant workers, who have returned to UP from various states, account for more than one-fourth of the total coronaviru­s cases in the state. “There are 2,466 migrant workers who have tested positive till now out of the total 77,446 samples taken from 1,203,680 inter- state migrants who are under surveillan­ce,” said Dr Vikasendu Agrawal, state surveillan­ce officer in the health department. While one death took place in Mau, a patient from Balrampur passed away at King George’s Medical University after 5pm. “The cause of death of all coronaviru­s patients will be clear after a death audit,” said Dr Agrawal. Till now, 5,257 patients have been discharged across the state, including 81 on Wednesday. The number of active cases in Uttar Pradesh is now 3,383, according to the health department data which was updated till 5pm. Kanpur registered its biggest single-day spike with 34 fresh Covid-19 cases, according to the health department. This spike was reported after 5pm. Nineteen cases were reported from Shiv Nagar Vidyut Colony in Govind Nagar, said chief medical officer, Kanpur, Ashok Shukla. The remaining cases were reported from different parts of the city. Kanpur, which has one of best recovery rates in the state, has witnessed a surge in Covid cases with about 100 new cases having emerged in the last week. While the authoritie­s were chalking out a new strategy, the number of Kanpur hot spots increased to 25.
