Lockdown made me reflect upon gender stereotypes
The lockdown phase has been a very tough phase for each one of us, specially, for the migrants and labourers. How I wish we could do more to see them through this rough phase. Life surely has taught as a number of lessons in this crisis.
During the break I got an opportunity to learn and think about some major social issues. From getting to know about the plight of migrants and small time workers despite having stern protective labour laws the countrymen have sadly failed them. Issues of caste and class struggle have deprived weaker sections for their basic rights. And then with best of amenities available we have incidents like ‘Boislocker room,’ proving how ugly the world has become at present. Cyber bullying, security threat and of course entrenched biases towards particular gender all happening at the same time what a progress.
The way we have been conditioned or brought up in the society ultimately moulds our attitude towards the other sex. I got umpteen time to read and study a number of articles. This gave me wider picture of where it all started and where it how reached in our society.
I believe, the ones who has food to eat and a house live are the highly privileged. And we should be grateful for this. Spend quality time with my family, reading and gardening became my escape from the sad realities of the world. Reading known social activist like Kamla Bhasin, Paromita Vohra and others have made me more informed and helped me to bring some structural changes in my own personality, as it is that ‘Harmony begins at home’ so to pass on good values to others you should learn them first.
