UP corona tally goes past 9000, 14 more die

LUCKNOW: It took just four days for Uttar Pradesh to add another 1,000 cases to its coronaviru­s tally, which went up to 9,237 on Thursday.

Apart from 371 fresh cases of infection during the day, 14 more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours as the total number of fatalities went up to 245, according to official data. Migrant workers accounted for 27.9% of UP’s tally.

“Till now, 2,583 migrant workers have tested positive out of the 80,960 samples collected from 1,239,380 inter-state migrants who are under surveillan­ce,” said Dr Vikasendu Agrawal, state surveillan­ce officer in the health department.

He said the death audit was being done to find out the cause of death of 245 people who succumbed after testing positive.

Till now, 5,439 patients have been discharged, including 185 on Thursday. The number of active cases in Uttar Pradesh is 3,663. Noida reported the maximum 31 cases on the day.

Principal secretary, health and family welfare, Amit Mohan Prasad said the study of data showed that 83 % of Covid patients with co-morbidity (another disease) died. Although the coronaviru­s infection rate was less among the people above 60 years 6% , the death rate among patients in this age group was 32.5%, he said.

People in the age group of 51-60 years should also remain alert as the death rate was 31.5% among them though the infection rate was 8.8%, he added.

There was no need for people to panic, but they should strictly follow the Covid protocol of social distancing, covering the face with mask and washing hands at regular intervals, he said.

According to health department data, 75 districts have reported cases till now, including Agra (914), Lucknow (423), Ghaziabad (365), Noida (558), Kanpur (418), Prayagraj (109), Moradabad (244) and Varanasi (206).

The first thousand cases (1,184) came up on April 20, which was 49 days since UP’s first instance of coronaviru­s infection was reported in Agra on March 2. The second thousand (2,053) mark was crossed on April 28. Ten days later, the state reached the milestone of 3,000 cases (3,214) on May

8. The 4,000-mark was breached on May 15 when the tally stood at 4,057. The 5,000 mark came up on May 20 and the tally went past 6,000 on May 23. The state’s tally reached 7,000 cases May 28 and went past the 8,000-mark on May

31. The 9,000-mark was crossed on June 4.
