Educated unemployed digging land for living, migrants jobless: Maya

-

LUCKNOW Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief and former UP chief minister Mayawati on Saturday came down hard on the BJP government in the state saying despite skill-mapping of migrant labourers, educated unemployed, with impressive degrees, were seen digging land under MNREGA to earn a living.

She also said the poor and unemployed could take to the streets if their issues weren’t addressed.

“The centre has said that all spending would be focussed on pro-poor and ‘atma-nirbhar’ or self-reliant India schemes. This is a welcome thing but the benefits of it should have reached the poor and educated unemployed,”she said in a press statement released through a news agency. “In UP mapping of skill-sets was also done but despite that what has happened, as migrants are still jobless. Even the educated ones with impressive degrees are seen digging up land for a living under MNREGA,” she said.

“Imagine the plight of the poor and their parents who might be wondering if their children had to end up digging land for living what was the need to acquire degrees? ,” she said.

“Many existing small and medium industries including those in Ghaziabad and Kannauj are facing closure. Now, these industries employed millions and the government while welcoming new industry must ensure that old ones, troubled by Covid-19 and lockdown, don’t close down. I am all for popularising new investment but please take care of the existing ones,” she said.
