Nagar palika staff dump man’s body in trash van; 7 suspended

LUCKNOW : The state government on Thursday suspended seven people, including three policemen and four nagar palika employees, hours after a 20-second video, showing municipal workers dumping the body of a man in a garbage van in Balrampur district, went viral.

The video shows the body of a man, identified as Mohammed Anwar (45), being picked up by three municipal workers and dumped into a garbage van in front of the policemen. “The incident took place near Tehsil Gate of Utraula block in Balrampur on Wednesday evening,” said Dev Ranjan Verma, superinten­dent of police (SP), Balrampur.

Anwar, a resident of Balrampur, had gone to a local government office where he collapsed at the gate and died. The reason of his death is unknown as of now, said police. An ambulance was parked near the gate of the office but fearing that the deceased was infected with coronaviru­s, the staff refused to transport the body. Later the municipal workers dumped the body in a garbage van. Some passersby made the video of the incident it went viral on Thursday. inquiry under sub-divisional magistrate and circle officer of Utraula. “A probe was ordered and those found guilty have been suspended,” Karunesh told reporters.

Verma told reporters that this incident should not have happened. “This is inhuman. They must have done it out of corona fear but still, it should not have happened. Sub-inspector Ravindra Kumar Raman, two police constables -- Subham Patel and Sahilendra Sharma -- have been suspended,” he said.A senior police official said the SP has ordered to sensitise the cops about Covid-19 situation and avoid such incidents.The body of Anwar, a resident of Sahzora village, under Sadullahna­gar police station in Balrampur, has been handed over to his family members for last rites, an officer said.
