LUCKNOW : The Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh has sought a list of lawyers, who have criminal antecedents, from the state government.

In a letter to state chief secretary RK Tiwari and DGP Hitesh Chandra Awasthy, Devendra Mishra ‘Nagraha’, acting chairman of Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh, has expressed his concern over increasing reports of lawyers being involved in such incidents that malign their image.

In the letter dated May 31, Mishra has requested the chief secretary and the DGP to provide details of all such lawyers who have been found to be involved in land grabbing, contractual work or in any anti-social activity anywhere in the state.

LUCKNOW The Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh has sought a list of lawyers, who have criminal antecedents, from the state government.

“I have asked the government to make available district–wise complete details with addresses of such lawyers to Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh so that their registration of practising law could be cancelled,” said Mishra.

A copy of the letter has also been sent to the governor, the chief minister and the law minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Prashant Singh ‘Atal’, member of Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh,

has also raised the issue several times.

“I have also asked the government to identify such lawyers who are involved in anti-social activities so that action could be taken against them,” said Singh.

“Lawyers with criminal antecedents are roaming in courts. The Bar Council must identify lawyers against whom criminal cases are pending. The Advocates Act 1961 also prohibits lawyers from carrying out any other activity except legal practice,” said Singh.

“Some lawyers are involved in all sorts of activities except practising law and are defaming judiciary,” Singh alleged.

Singh also said security on court premises must not be compromised and all lawyers must assist security personnel in carrying out screening at entry gates. On February 13 last, two groups of lawyers clashed in the district court, Lucknow, in which crude bombs were hurled.

UP Bar Council’s first woman president Darvesh Yadav was shot dead on the Agra district court campus in June last year. Another lawyer Jagnarayan Yadav, 63, was shot dead inside the district court campus, Basti on February 28 last.
