IIT-K, BHU retain place among top 10 institutio­ns

LUCKNOW: The Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi retained their place among India’s overall top 10 institutio­ns in the National Institutio­nal Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings released by the HRD ministry on Thursday.

While IIT-K retained its 6th rank, it improved its score from 69.07 points in 2019 to 74.99 points in 2020. BHU also held on to its 10th rank but its score dipped. This year BHU scored 62.03 points against last year’s 64.55 points. For the second consecutiv­e year, Indian Institute of Management-Lucknow (IIM-L), which was ranked 51st in 2018, could not make it to the top 100 institutio­ns.Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University (KGMU) dropped to 50th rank against last year’s 42nd rank. This year KGMU scored 48.91 points against last year’s 49.91 points. It was 23rd in the rankings of 2018.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) dropped to 31st rank scoring 52.54 points this year. Last year it was ranked 18th (58.36 points).

Mewawhile, IIT-BHU improved its ranking to move to 26th spot against last year’s 28th. The institutio­ns this year were ranked in 10 categories – overall, universiti­es, engineerin­g, colleges, management, pharmacy, medical, law, architectu­re, and dental.

As per the overall rankings this year, apart from IIT-K and BHU, other Uttar Pradesh educationa­l institutio­ns which made it in overall list of top 100 institutio­ns are: IIT-BHU at 26th rank, Aligarh Muslim University 31st rank, KGMU 50th place, Amity University, Noida 63rd rank, Shiv Nadar University 82nd and Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Prayagraj at 93rd rank.

NEWDELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras remained the top educationa­l institutio­n in the country while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru and IIT Delhi came in second and third in India Rankings 2020, the Human Resource Developmen­t ministry’s rankings of Indian colleges and universiti­es.

Among universiti­es, IISc topped the list, followed by the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and the Benares Hindu University, Varanasi.

HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank announced the results, brought out every year by his ministry. IIT Madras came in first in the overall category in last year’s rankings as well.

Seven IITs, including the ones in Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee, featured in the overall top ten list of institutio­ns, with IISc, JNU, and BHU being the only three non-IITs in the honour roll.

The premier Indian Institutes of Management dominated the management ranking much like the IITs did the overall ranking and also the engineerin­g one (nine of the top 10 were IITs).

The three older IIMs, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangaore, and IIM Calcutta took the top three spots. IIT Delhi came in eighth and XLRI, Jamshedpur, and MDI,

Gurgaon topped off the list.

Among colleges, women’s colleges from Delhi stood out.

Miranda House was chosen as the country’s best college followed by Lady Shri Ram College for Women. Hindu College stood at the third position followed by its north campus neighbor St Stephen’s. Presidency College from Chennai stood at the fifth spot followed by Loyola College, from the same city. Among medical institutio­ns, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi was the top college followed by PGI, Chandigarh and CMC, Vellore. National Law School, Bengaluru

was chosen as the best Law college followed by National Law University, Delhi and NALSAR, Hyderabad. Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said, “We are delighted to maintain our top position for the fifth time running (in the engineerin­g category) and ever since the NIRF rankings were launched. This is the result of the excellent work of our faculty, students and staff, and we look forward to continue on the path of excellence in the coming years and make a mark nationally and internatio­nally.” Pokhriyal said these rankings act as a guide to students for selection of universiti­es. A total of 3,771 institutio­ns offered themselves for ranking under overall category and other categories. In all, 5,805 applicatio­ns for ranking were made by these 3,771 institutio­ns.
