ANOTHER STEEP SPIKE: 24 DEATHS IN 24 HOURS

Kanpur reports maximum 48 cases, western UP districts account for bulk of fatalities

LUCKNOW In another biggest-single day spike, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday recorded 24 coronaviru­s deaths, the maximum so far in 24 hours, taking the state’s Covid-19 death toll to 345, according to state health department data.

Similarly, 480 fresh coronaviru­s positive cases were reported in the state as the overall tally of infected patients reached 12,088, the same data showed.

Five deaths were reported from Meerut, four from Kanpur, three each from Ghaziabad and Agra and one each from Aligarh, Hapur, Bulandshah­r, Moradabad, Azamgarh, Bijnor, Badaun, Jhansi and Hathras. Western UP districts accounted for 18 of the 24 deaths.

Till now, 7,292 patients have been discharged and the number of active cases stands at 4,451 now. Migrants who returned to UP from various states constitute 27.3% of the state’s Covid-19 tally.

“Till now, 3,303 migrant workers have tested positive out of the total 1,01,071 samples tested from among 1,513,585 inter-state migrants who are under surveillan­ce,” said Dr Vikasendu Agrawal, state surveillan­ce officer in the health department. He said a death audit was being done.

Additional chief secretary, Awanish Kumar Awasthi said chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday directed health department officers to check the death of Covid patients. A death audit should be conducted so that treatment could be made more effective, he said.

He said the chief minister ordered doctors and nursing staffs to make rounds of Covid wards regularly and monitor the condition of patients.

Principal secretary, health and medical welfare, Amit Mohan Prasad said people with coronaviru­s infection symptoms should get themselves tested immediatel­y. Those who test positive should get themselves admitted to hospital without delay, he added. People should understand that there was no stigma associated with the disease, the principal secretary said. Quick test and admission in hospital will save their life, he said. He said a death audit was being done. “Majority of the deaths are of those having co-morbidity or predisposi­ng factors such as poor immunity. Hence, such people need to take extra care and precaution,” said Dr Abhishek Shukla, secretary general, Associatio­n of Internatio­nal Doctors.

Among the fresh cases, Kanpur reported the maximum 48 while Noida reported 41 cases. According to health department data, all 75 districts have reported cases till now. These districts include Agra (999), Lucknow (512), Ghaziabad (554), Noida (788), Kanpur (604), Prayagraj (136), Moradabad (287) and Varanasi (257).

Uttar Pradesh’s first Covid-19 case was reported from Agra on March 2. The state reached the unwelcome milestone of 1,000 cases, 49 days later on April 20 and 12,000 cases on June 11.
