LUCKNOW/AGRA Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday demanded a high level inquiry and strict action against the people who forced a Dalit family to take off the body of a woman from the funeral pyre in an Agra village during cremation rituals.

In a series of tweets, Mayawati said upper caste people forced the Dalit family to take off the body from the funeral pyre by claiming that the cremation ground was for them only.

“The incident is shameful and it should be condemned. To check repeat of such abhorrent incidents, the state government should order a high level inquiry and take strict action against the culprits,” Mayawati said.

According to a police officer, a 25-year-old Dalit woman died in Kakarpura village on July 19 and her family carried the body to the gram sabha cremation ground to perform the last rites.

According to a police officer, a 25-year-old Dalit woman died in Kakarpura village on July 19 and her family carried the body to the gram sabha cremation ground to perform the last rites. He said some upper caste people objected to the cremation there and forced the Dalit family to take the body to another cremation ground located away from the village.

The incident came to light when some locals highlighted it on social media.

Husband of deceased, Rahul Bajania, said: “My wife Pooja died after prolonged illness on July 19 and was taken for cremation on July 20. There were no objection by villagers, by and large, but about half-a-dozen upper caste members came and objected to the cremation by us as we are

Gujrati Nats.” “We had prepared the pyre but were forced to take the body away to village Nagla Lal Dass, about four km away, where the cremation was done,” stated Rahul, who claimed that police reached the village but was helpless in front of the upper caste people. Superintendent of police (West) Ravi Kumar said no complaint was lodged in this regard. “We have not received any complaint but circle officer of Achhnera area has been asked to find out more about the matter. Necessary action will follow his findings,” said the SP West. Maya slams AAP govt

In a separate tweet, Mayawati hit out at Delhi’s AAP government over the death of a Dalit doctor in the national capital.

The Madhya Pradesh born doctor had died due to coronavirus infection. “The Delhi government should give up its casteist mentality and assist the family members of the doctor. The family had taken bank for the education of the deceased doctor,” she claimed.
