PRAYAGRAJ: Prayagraj police has cracked two sensational murder cases over the last couple of months with the help of ‘Raja’, a tracking dog, inducted into the police force about two months back.

Tracking refers to a dogs’ heightened olfactory ability to detect, recognize and follow a specific scent.

Since its induction, Raja has helped police crack two sensational murders as he ‘sniffed’ out the culprits in no time.

Before Raja, the police had another tracking dog Smarty. After his death few months back, the police were looking for a suitable alternative which they found in Raja. Along with Raja another tracking dog ‘Boss’ has also been inducted into the force.

Santosh Kumar said of the two tracking dogs, Raja is exceptional.

“Both follow special routine which includes training sessions and exercise. Their diet includes, milk, egg and meat, he added.

Santosh further said that police officials were impressed with Raja’s extraordinary ability of sniffing clues and then following it to the suspects.

On August 23, one Jitendra was killed by his brother who later committed suicide by jumping before the train. However, police was not able to trace Jitendra’s brother Chhotu. Raja was taken to the crime scene, he sniffed Chhotu’s slipper and then straight away ran towards the tracks where Chhotu’s body was lying.

Earlier on June 2, one Irfan and his wife Husna were killed and their bodies were disposed of by their kin. Raja was called to Irfan’s residence in Mehandauri area. Raja sniffed some blood spots in the house and reached the house of Irfan’s brother Rizwan where the dog pulled out a blood stained shirt of Rizwan’s son Shiraz. Police detained Shiraz who confessed to his involvement in the murders.
