‘UP literacy rate poorer than national average’

THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN LITERACY RATE BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN IN UP. THE DIFFERENCE IS ABOUT 20% IN RURAL AREAS.

LUCKNOW : Literacy rate of Uttar Pradesh is 73% which is less than the national average of 77.7%, reveals a report based on National Statistica­l Office (NSO) survey.

UP stands at fifth last position and with 96.2% literacy Kerala has once again emerged as the most literate state in the country while Andhra Pradesh featured at the bottom with a rate of 66.4%.

The report on ‘Household Social Consumptio­n: Education in India as part of 75th round of National Sample Survey - from July 2017 to June 2018’ provides for state-wise detail of literacy rate among persons aged seven years and above. According to the report, in UP, including rural and urban areas, literacy rate among male is 81.8% and female 63.4%. In rural Uttar Pradesh, literacy rate among male is 80.5% and female 60.4% while in urban UP, it is 86.8% for male and 74.9% for female.

The reports states that there is a huge difference in literacy rate between men and women in Uttar Pradesh. The difference is about 20% in rural areas.

Sanjay Sinha, director, literacy in Uttar Pradesh said, “Uttar Pradesh’s poor ranking could be attributed to the fact there is no proper continuous programme. Sakshar Bharat Mission programme ended on March 2018. Now, Padhna Likhna abhiyan, a new initiative is coming up under the New Education Policy2020.”
