LUCKNOW: The state capital’s second electric crematorium at Gulalaghat was dedicated to the public on Tuesday by urban development minister Ashutosh Tandon in the presence of mayor Sanyukta Bhatia and municipal commissioner Ajay Dwivedi.

This facility is expected to offload the electric crematorium at Bhainsakund (Baikunth Dham), where staff is working overtime for the cremation of Covid bodies.

The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has constructed this second electric crematorium at a cost of Rs 1.50 lakh under its integrated scheme for pollution-free cremation of bodies, said Ashutosh Tandon, minister of urban development.

He said, “This crematorium will offload Bhainsakund electric crematorium where staff is working overtime. They cremate around 15 bodies every day amid the Covid pandemic. Now, there will be another place for cremation of bodies, especially those of corona infected people.”

Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia said , “We never saw this kind of acceptance of the electric crematorium in the pre-Covid era . Earlier, people preferred the traditional cremation with wood. But after the Covid-19 pandemic, electric crematorium is the first choice as it minimises chances of infection and is also recommended by authorities for safety purposes.”

Municipal commissioner Ajay Dwivedi said the Gulalaghat crematorium would also be beautified like the Baikunth Dham. Residents of areas like Chowk, Thakurganj and Daliganj prefer this crematorium for last rites of their kin.

“Electric cremations are free and less time consuming,” said Ajay Dwivedi.

Senior Congress corporator Girish Mishra said, “The electric crematorium is good for the area, but the way BJP leaders inaugurated this facility by cutting the ribbon was surprising. They forgot that this is a facility for the cremation of the dead. It’s not an opening of a showroom.”
