LUCKNOW: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday asked officials to accelerate implementation of the ‘Har Ghar Nal’ scheme for clean potable water to all households in Bundelkhand and Vindhyachal regions of the state, said a state government statement.

Yogi had announced the scheme — linked to the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ for Vindhya and Bundelkhand regions -- last year to provide hygienic potable water to every household in thousands of villages of Vindhya and Bundelkhand regions at the earliest so that residents of these areas did not have to walk miles to get drinking water.

With the combined efforts of UP government and ministry of jal shakti, supply of clean drinking water is expected to reach the more than one crore people in a year before the scheduled time of two years, said the statement. Under the scheme, the government is working on 12 projects in Jhansi, Lalitpur and Mahoba of Bundelkhand at a cost of about Rs 2,185 crore, which will provide clean drinking water to about 67 lakh people. Along with laying pipelines, the plan of cleaning the water of rivers and dams has also begun. In Jhansi, 10 schemes worth Rs 1,627.94 crore will be based on water. Lalitpur will have 16 surface water resources and 12 groundwater based piped drinking water schemes worth Rs 1,623.47 crore, the statement said. At the same time, water will be delivered to 364 villages in Mahoba at a cost of Rs 1,219.74 crore. The scheme will prove beneficial to women of these areas, who struggle every day to fetch water from far off places.

Work in Sonbhadra and Mirzapur in the Vindhya region has also started and the government will soon provide clean water through pipes to 1,606 villages of Mirzapur under the central government’s ‘Har Ghar Nal’ scheme. A total of 21,87,980 villagers of Mirzapur will directly benefit from this scheme.

In Sonbhadra, water from lakes and rivers will be purified and supplied for drinking to 19,53,458 families belonging to 1,389 villages.

Apart from this, the water collected at the dam in Mirzapur will also be purified and supplied. It is to be completed in four phases -- the first phase is to be completed in Bundelkhand, second in Vindhyachal, third in the encephalitis and Japanese fever affected areas and lastly in the regions where groundwater is contaminated with fluoride and arsenic.
