LUCKNOW : Urban development Ashutosh Tandon, minister of health education and finance Suresh Khanna and mayor Sanyukta Bhatia took out a Swacchta Maharally from 1090 crossing to Lalbagh headquarters of Lucknow Municipal Corporation to raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness.

Speaking on the occasion, Suresh Khanna said: “The aim of the rally is to take sanitation issue to the masses. We want to bring Lucknow at number one position in all India sanitation rankings. Cleanliness is as important as independence. Prime minister Narendra Modi has worked hard to implement the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi and that is why he included cleanliness campaign in his priorities.”

Urban development minister Gopal ji Tandon said: “When BJP came to power Lucknow was at 269th place in overall sanitation rankings. Today it stands at 12th spot. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Swacch Bharat campaign people laughed at him but he went ahead with the campaign and over 12 crore toilets were constructed in the country. The safai mitras (sanitation workers) are the safai senanis (sanitation fighters) as they are fighting the filth in the city.”

He further said, “Due to better sanitation Lucknow has controlled problems of vectorborne diseases. Good sanitation also promotes tourism. More tourists will bring more prosperity so it’s the responsibility of the society to join the campaign.”

Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia called upon residents not to dump waste on roads and throw them at bins and designated places.
