Sports College boy breaks national record in athletics

LUCKNOW: An inmate of the Lucknow’s Guru Gobind Singh Sports College, Shahrukh Khan produced national record in the under-16 event on the final day of the 36th National Junior Athletics Championsh­ips at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Khan won the boys 2000m in 5 minutes 27.87 seconds, erasing the previous record of 5:31.87 set up by Vikas at Coimbatore in 2016. Another boy from Uttar Pradesh, Amit Chaudhry and Haryana’s Rohit finished second and third, respective­ly.

On Tuesday, Varanasi’s Munita Prajapati had created new national record in walk race in the women’s under-20 category of 10000m, whereas a boy from Sambhal, Anurag Singh Kaler also finished with a national record in shot put in Under-16 category.

Besides the trio, many other athletes out of 155 from Uttar Pradesh won medals in the five-day event. They included, Rohit Yadav, Sandeep Kumar, Ankit Kumar Yadav, Shaban, Chandrashe­khar, Karan Kumar, Kashish Singh, Khyati Mathur, Vidhi, Sunita Devi, Nadeem, Ritik Chaudhary, Abhishek Pal, Amit Choudhary, Ujjwal Kasana, Rebi Pal, Rupali, Archana Yadav, Rahul Sharma, Shravan Kumar, Usaid Khan, Nand Kishore Singh, Neeraj Kumar, Izhar, Prinshu Yadav, Ruby Kashyap, Manshi, Neetika Verma, Rupal, Tanya Chaudhary, and Roshani Yadav.

The overall championsh­ip went to Haryana, who finished with 55 medals, including 21 golds. Tamil Nadu with 37 medals and Uttar Pradesh with 35 medals finished second and third, respective­ly.
