TN, Maharashtr­a win team titles in Postal carrom championsh­ip

LUCKNOW: Tamil Nadu and Maharashtr­a emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s team events at the 25th All India Postal Carrom Championsh­ip, at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium here on Wednesday. Tamil Nadu defeated Assam by 2-1, whereas Maharashtr­a beat defending champions Telengana also by 2-1. Host Uttar Pradesh stood third in the men’s category, defeating Bihar by 2-1, whereas in the women’s category, Tamil Nadu stood third, outplaying West Bengal by 2-1.

SELECTION TRIALS

Trial to select Uttar Pradesh’s sub-junior boys hockey team will be held on February 13 and 14, at the Master Chandgiram Sports Stadium in Saifai at 8.00 am. Selected team would participat­e in the 11th Hockey India National Championsh­ip, scheduled to be held from March 17-28 at Jind in Haryana. But the sub-junior women’s team trials will take place also on February 13, at the Padma Shri Mohammad Shahid Synthetic Hockey Stadium here at 8.00 am. The nationals are slated to be played from March 10-21 March at Simdega, Jharkhand.

RP IN SELECTION PANEL

Former captain of Indian men’s hockey team and Uttar Pradesh’s

director sports, RP Singh was on Wednesday named in the selection committee of the Hockey India. This was for the fourth time in the last 25 years when he has been named in the selection panel.

Singh, who has been the Athlete Representa­tive of Hockey India in the past too, sounds confident to do well with the given responsibi­lity. “Ever since I was made a member in the selection panel first time in 1996, I have been trying to do justice to my responsibi­lity. I am sure that this time too I would continue to do my best for the game,” Singh said.

FINE BOWLING

Kooh Sports bowlers Anand Srivastava (3/9), Omkar (2/11) and RP Singh (2/12) bowled superbly to help the side notch up a fascinatin­g eight-wicket win against Central Cricket Club in the prize money Super League here on Wednesday.

The trio broke CCC’s batting line-up with accuracy, getting them out for paltry 44 in just 17.2 overs.

NOMINATED

The Indian Olympic Associatio­n (IOA) on Wednesday appointed Lucknow’s Abhijit Sarkar as one of the members in the 11-member committee for the formation of constituti­ons, governance reforms and sports code advisory group. Senior vice-president in the Uttar Pradesh Olympic Associatio­n and also an elected executive member of the IOA, Sarkar would work in the committee, which is being led by former chief of the All India Tennis Associatio­n, Anil Khanna. Other members in the panel are: Sudhanshu Mittal, Onkar Singh, Digvijay Singh, VN Parsood, Hemochandr­a Singh, Ajit Banerjee, Malav Shroff, Debendrana­th Sarangi and man Mohan Jaiswal, a communiqué from IOA’s secretary-general Rajeev Mehta states.
