Dalit activist Shiv Kumar granted bail

Dalit labour rights activist Shiv Kumar was on Thursday released from jail after a court in Sonipat granted the Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan president bail in an attempt to murder case. Kumar was also granted bail in two cases of rioting and extortion on Wednesday. This was the third case. The activist was arrested on January 23 for allegedly attacking police personnel after members of his group, led by labour activist Nodeep Kaur, gheraoed a factory in Kundli on January 12 and allegedly extorted the factory owner for money on the pretext of providing workers their unpaid salaries. “Co-accused Nodeep Kaur, whose case is identical, has been released on bail by the Punjab and Haryana high court... the applicant is entitled to be released on bail on the ground of parity,” his lawyer Jatinder Kumar said.
