KANPUR: A man, said to be mentally challenged, climbed on a petrol filled wagon and grabbed the overhead high tension electricity line, resulting in he catching fire, at Anwarganj station here late Thursday evening.

The railway personnel on the station managed to douse the flames and took the man to hospital, where his condition was stated to be critical till last report came in.

Speaking about the incident, an official said there was an explosion as the man came in contact with the overhead wires. “Luckily the fire was controlled quickly, otherwise it could have wreaked havoc as the tankers were filled with petrol,” said an official.

Deputy chief traffic manager Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyaya and station superintendent PN Trivedi also reached the station. A fire tender was also pressed into service to pour water on the wagon to cool it down, the official said.
