LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Tuesday decided for free Covid-19 vaccination for those above 18 years of age among the poor even in private hospitals in the state. The vaccination in government hospitals is already free. The next phase of the vaccination drive begins on May 1.

An official spokesman said the state government would bear the cost of vaccination of the poor from its own resources. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath presided over the meeting of the state cabinet via video conference that asked the state health department to formulate an action plan for the largescale vaccination plan.

The state cabinet expressed its gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing the facility of vaccination to all those above 18 years of age from May 1, a press release by the state government said.

Yogi Adityanath said the vaccination of the 18-plus age group would prove decisive in the fight against Covid-19. He said the state government would have to increase the vaccination centres and work out a data base of the targeted age groups.

The state government would also have to evaluate the demand and make arrangements for its supply by getting in touch with the manufacturers, he added.

The chief minister said that the state government will also have to make arrangements for cold chain, safe storage and transportation of the vaccine.

He said all the ministers in charge of different districts should keep an eye on the medical treatment being given to patients and provide necessary guidance to administration there. The ministers have also been asked to oversee the ambulance service and integrated command control centres.

Additional chief secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Amit Mohan Prasad since the start of the Covid-19 vaccination drive on January 16, Uttar Pradesh had administered 1.09 crore doses. While 92,44,878 people were given the first dose, 16,89,688 people received the second one too, he said.

He also said the state government would prepare a work plan for the third phase of the vaccination.

The state government procures vaccine under the guidelines and the rate fixed by the Central government. Uttar Pradesh is using Covaxin manufactured by the Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Limited in association with ICMR and NIV. The other vaccine was Covishield manufactured by Serum Institute of India, said a health department officer.

Uttar Pradesh has 14.66 crore voters above 18 years of age. The Election Commission revised the electoral rolls in January 2021, an official said.
