Judicial commission gives clean chit to UP Police in Dubey case

LUCKNOW: An inquiry commission chaired by a retired Supreme Court judge has given a clean chit to the UP Police in connection with allegations of the gunning down of gangster Vikas Dubey and his five aides in separate encounters in July 2020, said a senior home department official privy to the development here on Wednesday.

LUCKNOW : An inquiry commission chaired by a retired Supreme Court judge has given a clean chit to the UP Police in connection with allegations of the gunning down of gangster Vikas Dubey and his five aides in separate encounters in July 2020, said a senior home department official privy to the development here on Wednesday.

The commission headed by Justice (retired) BS Chauhan reached this conclusion after it found no evidence against the police claim of gunning down Dubey in a genuine encounter while he tried to escape from police custody, the official added. He said the commission probed the matter for around nine months before submitting its report.

A commission member confirmed that the commission submitted its report to the state home department as well as to the Supreme Court on Monday after analysing the facts for around nine months since the probe was set up. He refused to disclose more details of the report and stated that the home department would speak about the findings.

The home department official said the commission mentioned in its report that nobody from the public, media or from Dubey’s family came forward to present any proof against the police or challenge their claim.

The three-member enquiry commission comprising Justice BS Chauhan, retired Allahabad high court judge Justice SK Agarwal and retired UP DGP KL Gupta was formed in the last week of July 2020 to probe the killings of Dubey and his five associates by the UP Police in encounters between July 3 and 10, 2020.

The police action came after Dubey and his gang members killed eight policemen, including Deputy SP Devendra Mishra, when the police team raided his parental house in Kanpur’s Bikru village on the intervening night of July 2 and 3, 2020.

Dubey was later gunned down while being brought back to Kanpur by UP Police after his dramatic arrest from Mahakaal temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on July 10, 2020. The police had claimed that Dubey was shot when he tried to escape from the police custody after snatching the pistol of one of the police personnel when the SUV transporting him met with an accident on the outskirts of Kanpur.
