Meerut on alert after 1,240 test positive in a single day

MEERUT: With 1,240 people testing positive for COVID-19 in a single day on Tuesday, Meerut is fast turning into a coronaviru­s hotspot of the Western Uttar Pradesh.

According to officials, the test reports of 6,989 persons have been found positive in past 20 days. On Tuesday, 10,033 samples were tested and of these 1,240 were declared positive. Officials said 2,569 persons are undergoing treatment in home isolation. A day before, 845 persons tested positive, and people are now scared of the increasing positivity rate of the virus.

Meanwhile, as per the data of health department, 21 persons had died of the infection in past 20 days but queue of dead bodies at Surajkund crematoriu­m shows a different picture. Acharya at Surajkund, who performs the last rites, said that every day they are performing the last rites of 10 to 12 mortal remains with Covid protocol. “The situation has reversed as we have been receiving more coronaviru­s infected bodies and barely 2 or 3 of normal deaths,” said the Acharya who claimed that they are short of platforms for performing last rites
