VARANASI : Ancient Akshayvat tree, believed to be hundreds of years old, located near Hanuman temple in Kashi Vishwanath Temple area fell on Wednesday, said members of the mahant family.

They said they had urged the KV temple officials that the construction work of Kashi Vishwanath corridor should be done while ensuring the safety of the ancient tree. The officials gave them assurance of conserving the ancient tree and also started conservation work. The mahant family members, however, alleged that the work for the tree’s conservation was not done seriously. Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati and Congress leader Ajai Rai expressed their anger over the incident. Rai said had the conservation of the tree been done properly, it would not have fallen. Moreover, KV Temple officials said the conservation was being done.
