‘UP procures over 9.66 LMT of wheat from 1.86L farmers’

THE GOVERNMENT HAS INCREASED THE MSP OF WHEAT FROM RS 1,925 IN 2020-21 TO RS 1,975 IN 2021-22.

LUCKNOW : The UP government has procured 9.66 lakh metic tonnes (LMT) of wheat till Tuesday in the ongoing procuremen­t season.

In the statement, Manish Chauhan, commission­er, Food and Civil Supplies department, said that the lifting of grains had already picked up pace and so far a total purchase worth Rs 1,909 crore had been made from the farmers.

According to Chauhan, “at the minimum support price (MSP) of 1,975 per quintal, the 9.66 lakh MT of wheat bought by the state government agencies so far is worth about Rs 1,909 crore, till April 27”. He further added that the payment was directly credited to the farmers’ bank accounts. “Until now, 1,86,000 farmers from various districts of the state have benefitted”, said Chauhan. In the Rabi marketing year, the procuremen­t of wheat directly from farmers under the MSP commenced on April 1, 2021. The government has increased the MSP of wheat from Rs 1,925 in 2020-21 to Rs 1,975 in 2021-22.

Besides, the number of procuremen­t centers has been increased from 5000 last year to 6,000 this time.

To prevent the farmers from getting infected with the coronaviru­s, Covid desk has set up at every centre, he said.
