In highest single-day surge, UP records 298 new deaths

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh reported 298 fresh fatalities, the highest in a single day, taking the death toll in the state to 12238 on Friday. There were 35156 new covid cases, which took the total case count to 1217952.

Also, there were two cases of violence in which attendants of covid patients reportedly attacked health staff alleging lack of facilities. “In all, 225312 covid samples were tested in the state, including 107000 via RT PCR method. Private labs tested 23000 samples. The total number of tests has reached 40553875, which is highest in any state in the country,” said Amit Mohan Prasad, additional chief secretary, medical health in a press conference on Thursday. Of the total 309237 active cases, 238856 patients are in home isolation and 7663 are in private hospitals.

Of the total 309237 active cases, 238856 patients are in home isolation and 7663 are in private hospitals while remaining in government covid facilities. The labs in the state have been sent 97126 RT PCR samples in the past 24 hours.

Prasad said that a decision had also been taken to extend the validity of registrati­on of hospitals and nursing homes till July 31 from April 30. “It was being demanded and has been agreed upon,” said Prasad.

“We have got 14 oxygen generation plants from the PM CARES fund and now proposal for 61 more for different districts has been sent to the government of India,” said Prasad adding, “We are also working upon vaccinatio­n for all above 18 years of age which is scheduled to begin from May 1.”

During the day, Lucknow reported 4126 fresh covid cases, Prayagraj 984, Kanpur 1896, Meerut 965, Gorakhpur 1198, Ghaziabad 898, Gautam Budha Nagar 1478, Agra 938, Jhansi 900, Varanasi 1598. Of the total 298 deaths in the state, Lucknow reported maximum 37 deaths, Prayagraj 19, Kanpur 16, Ghaziabad 12, Gautam Budha Nagar 11, Varanasi 9, Shahjahanp­ur 10, Chandauli 12.

Meanwhile, angry relatives of two Covid patients attacked hospital staff in Budaun on Thursday claiming that their patients died due to oxygen shortage, according to agencies.

The officials, however, denied the charges. Chief Medical Superinten­dent of Budaun district hospital, Dr B V Ram said the duo was given medication but they had breathing problem and died. They were admitted in the hospital at about 12.05 pm in the emergency ward and had breathing problem. They were given medication but died within 35 minutes of being admitted, Ram said.

In a similar incident in Ballia, family members of a patient vandalised the local hospital superinten­dent’s office due to alleged non-availabili­ty of oxygen, officials said.

An FIR was lodged against 13 people. DM Aditi Singh said there was no shortage of oxygen and the supply of the life-saving gas had been increased.
