Give ₹50 lakh to kin of teachers who died on poll duty: Akhilesh, Priyanka

LUCKNOW: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday demanded Rs 50 lakh compensati­on from UP government for teachers who died of COVID-19 after panchayat election duty in UP.

Both Priyanka and Akhilesh took to Twitter on Thursday to express their concern over death of a large number of teachers due to Covid after panchyat election duty.

Yadav, the first one to tweet, said, “All those officers, teachers and state government employees who were deployed in panchyat elections duty, the UP government should give compensati­on of Rs 50 lakh to the bereaved family.” He said the ruling BJP government should provide security else government employees will boycott counting duty.

Priyanka, in her tweet said, “The news of death of 500 teachers engaged in election duty is very saddening and scary.” She questioned when the arrangemen­ts were so poor why teachers were sent to duty. She demanded compensati­on of Rs 50 lakh for the grieving family and suitable a job for the dependants.

Teachers’ community claims that hundreds of their colleagues and shiksa mitra succumbed to COVID-19 after during election duty.

One the dead included a state government awardee teacher Afaque Ahmad of Deoria.

Two teachers who were appointed under 69000 newly recruited assistant teachers succumbed to COVID-19 without getting their first salary.

Meanwhile, national secretary of Rashtriya Lok Dal, Anil Dubey held the UP government responsibl­e for deaths of officers, teachers and government staff, who got infected of COVID-19 during panchayat elections.

He too has demanded compensati­on of Rs 50 lakh for those who died after contractin­g infection during election duty. He said government should make an elaborate arrangemen­t during counting day of May 2 adhering to COVID-19 protocol.
