FORMER MAYOR DAUJI GUPTA PASSES AWAY

LUCKNOW: Former mayor of Lucknow and noted scholar Dauji Gupta (80) passed away due to corona-generated weakness on Sunday. Gupta remained mayor of Lucknow for a period of 21 years. He was elected mayor on July 5, 1971 and continued on this post till May 27, 1992. According to his family members, Gupta had tested Covid positive, but he recovered on April 30 when his report came negative. He is survived by two sons and a daughter. Dauji Gupta represente­d India at the World Mayors’ Conference (WMC) in Hawaii in 1971 and was elected vice-president of the body. He was the only north Indian dignitary to be awarded the Perrier award of Tamil Nadu government.

Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia has expressed her condolence­s over the demise of the former mayor.

Corporator of JC Bose ward Sayyed Yawar Hussain Reshu said , “Dauji Gupta is credited with installing the statue of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar at Hazratganj crossing. He worked closely with a number of social, cultural and academic institutio­ns, had good knowledge of Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Pali and English and was the author of 15 books on various subjects.”
