Mayawati expresses concern over post-poll violence in state

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president Mayawati on Friday expressed concern over the post-panchayat poll violence in the state and urged the state government to take strict measures to check it.

In a tweet, BSP chief said after the declaratio­n of the panchayat poll results, reports of political violence, brawl, arson and crime cases were pouring in daily from various parts of the state, which was a matter of concern. The state government should act immediatel­y to check such violence, she said.

A BSP leader said party chief Mayawati was reviewing the performanc­e of the party in the panchayat elections when party office bearers informed her about reports of violence after panchayat polls from various districts of the state. In Gorakhpur, violent mob reportedly set afire a police outpost in Nai Bazar under Jhangha police station in Brahampur area of the district on Wednesday. The police personnel had to flee from the outpost to save their life. Incidents of violence were also reported in Gonda, Bareilly, Jaunpur, Azamgarh, Jaunpur and Pratapgarh, he said.

A Home Department officer said the superinten­dents of police of all the districts had been directed to take action against the anti-social elements indulging in violence and criminal activities. “Cases have been registered in various districts, anti-social elements arrested and firearms sized by the district police,” he said.
