Gang busted in Meerut for stealing, re-selling shrouds

The Baraut police busted a gang stealing shrouds and other clothes from cremation grounds and selling them after repacking them with the name of a Gwalior-based cloth company. Seven people were arrested including a shopkeeper and two of his family members from Baraut district of Baghpat, on Sunday.

According to a district administra­tion communique the gang members were sent to jail after registerin­g a case against them under appropriat­e sections of IPC and the Epidemic Act.

The police team recovered 520 shrouds, 127 kurtas, 140 white shirts, 34 white dhotis, 12 coloured shawls, 52 sarees, 3 ribbon packets, 158 ribbons of a Gwalior company and 112 stickers of the Gwalior-based cloth company.

Police had been receiving inputs about the activity of a gang for quite some time and raided the shop where material was sold after repacking it. Shopkeeper Praveen Kumar Jain and two family members, Ashish Jain and Risabh Jain, were arrested along with Shravan Sharma, Ashish, Bablu and Shahrukh. “The arrested persons have been sent to jail”, said Kanchi Singh, SSI, Baraut police station.

The arrested have been involved in unethical activities for years. They hired persons who used to steal shrouds and clothes off dead bodies from cremation grounds. They sold it at Praveen’s shop after washing and ironing them. The repacked clothes were sold after placing stickers of a Gwalior based cloth company on it.
