Mayor fetes woman who runs free hearse for Covid bodies
LUCKNOW: Varsha Verma, an author and a judo player, who has been ferrying bodies of deceased Covid-19 patients to the crematorium for free, was felicitated by Lucknow mayor Sanyukta Bhatia on Sunday.
The Lucknow mayor invited Verma and felicitated her by offering her a sari, an angvastra and a citation and told Verma that she and Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) would extend all possible help to her in her mission.
“She has done a great service to society. She has set a fine example of how women have been making an impact. I would be ready to help her 24x7,” the mayor said after felicitating Verma.
The mayor also called up Lucknow municipal commissioner Ajay Dwivedi and told him to extend all help to the woman.
Verma, who runs an NGO ‘Ek Koshish Aisi Bhi’, said she started the free hearse service for bodies of deceased Covid-19 people after finding regular hearse owners demanding exorbitant amounts for transporting such bodies to the cremation ground.
Now, several organisations and individuals have started offering similar help.
