NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have issued a lookout circular for double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, who has been pronounced an absconder in the case of alleged murder of wrestler Sagar Dhankad. Police teams are searching for Kumar and his associates from Wednesday onwards after they allegedly attacked Dhankad, leading to his death at the Chhattrasal Stadium in northwest Delhi’s Model Town on Tuesday night.

Eight to 10 police teams involving more than 50 personnel are carrying out searches to arrest Kumar and his associates. They have carried out raids in Haryana and Delhi-NCR, police said on Monday.

“It’s been six days since Kumar and others went absconding. A lookout circular has been issued against him. We are also using technical surveillance to trace the absconding suspects. Recently, their location was tracked in Uttarakhand. Teams have been sent to arrest them. We are also in touch with their family members,” said a senior police officer, who did not wish to be named.

One arrested

So far, one person, Prince Dalal, has been arrested. Police said earlier that they have recovered a video clip from Dalal’s mobile phone that is purportedly a recording of Kumar and others assaulting Dhankad and his friends Sonu and Amit Kumar in the stadium on Tuesday night. The 23-year-old Dhankad, son of a Delhi police head constable, succumbed to injuries in a hospital the next morning. Sonu, receiving treatment in the hospital, in a police statement named Kumar and his aides as the assailants.

Police then registered a case of murder and began searching for Kumar--he won bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and silver in the 2012 London Olympics—and his accomplices.

A preliminary police inquiry showed the fight between the two groups was sparked over a disputed flat in Model Town, occupied by Dhankad and owned by Kumar. Senior officers though said the exact reason for the assault can be ascertained only after the alleged culprits are arrested.
