LUCKNOW: Even as senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan battles Covid-19 in a private hospital in Lucknow, his supporters have filed a police complaint against those spreading rumours of his death on social media.

“Some miscreants with malicious intent are spreading rumours about the death of Azam Khan. The false news has led to panic among his supporters and followers. Police must take action against individuals spreading such rumours,” said Irshad Mahmood, a local Samajwadi Party worker in Rampur.

Azam was arrested last year after several cases were lodged against him in Rampur. The former minister, along with his son and wife, were lodged in Sitapur jail. While his wife was released recently, Azam and his son remained in jail and contracted Covid-19.

They were shifted to a private hospital in Lucknow last week.

According to hospital sources, the condition of Azam is critical but stable while that of his son is stable. “We are in touch with hospital sources and other officials and are continuously monitoring his health. Despite this, some people are using the opportunity to spread rumours to cause panic,” said Irshad. Rampur police is investigating the matter. No FIR was lodged regarding the complaint till Thursday evening, said Rampur police sources.
