TIMES GROUP CHAIRPERSON INDU JAIN DIES
NEW DELHI: Indu Jain, chairperson of the Times group and a prominent patron of arts and culture in India, died on Thursday evening of Covid-related complications. She was 84.
Jain was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country’s thirdhighest civilian award, in 2016. In 2000, she founded the Times Foundation, which runs community services and charitable bodies.
“Saddened by the demise of Times Group Chairperson Smt. Indu Jain Ji. She will be remembered for her community service initiatives, passion towards India’s progress and deep-rooted interest in our culture. I recall my interactions with her. Condolences to her family. Om Shanti” tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Jain was the president emeritus of the board of Bharatiya Jnanpith Trust, which confers the Jnanpith award. “Well versed in ancient scriptures and belief systems, she wore her erudition lightly and her conversation was peppered with witty remarks and delighted laughter,” noted a report in the group’s flagship publication, The Times of India.
