With collective and team efforts, we were able to control active cases to a maximum of about 67,000 (in August/ September 2020) YOGI ADITYANATH, UP CM

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said the second wave of the Covid-19 infection in the state was under control. He asked the officials to continue with the aggressive strategy of tracing, testing and treatment to further contain Covid-19 cases.

The CM also laid stress on increasing the role of nigrani samitis (monitoring committees) in both rural and urban areas. He was in Ghaziabad to review the Covid-19 situation here.

About the first wave last year, the chief minister said there were apprehensions that there would be one lakh active cases in August/September 2020.

“But with collective and team efforts, we were able to control active cases to a maximum of about 67,000 and single-day spike was 7,200. In the first wave, there was more need of L1 category Covid beds. We created 1.16 lakh such beds and 23000 beds of L2/L3 category,” he said.

The L1, L2 and L3 hospitals were created last year as part of the UP government’s three-tier structure to deal with Covid cases. The L1 hospitals were generally for asymptomatic cases while L2 hospitals deal with patients having mild to moderate symptoms. The L3 hospitals tackle severe Covid cases.

The second wave started by mid-April and experts felt that after April 25, UP would have about one lakh cases per day, he said.

“But again, with team effort, besides participation of residents, we have been able to control the second wave and the peak is also under control. Now, we have the capacity to conduct 2.5 to 3 lakh tests per day,” he added.

He said that he visited Bhowapur village in Ghaziabad and said that the focus was now on rural areas.

The officials of the health department said the chief minister told them the free-of-cost medical kit distribution should also be done through the nigrani samitis which were in direct touch with the residents.
