Watermelon: A summer gift
It is that time of the year when watermelons are a hot favourite! Social media has been flooded with delicious and healthy items made from one main ingredient: watermelon. Food bloggers are seen making kiwi watermelon popsicles, watermelon mint and cucumber mojito, watermelon salad and much more. Wondering why this fruit is attracting so much love this season? Chefs say it is because many have woken up to its benefits amid the ongoing pandemic.
“Unlike every year, this year has made us more aware and conscious of what we eat. People are reading and becoming more aware, which is why watermelons are becoming popular this season,” says chef Ashish Singh.
To this, restaurateur Sagar Bajaj, who has made drinks and salads with the refreshing fruit and says it is doing quite well this season, adds, “One of the most versatile fruits with the highest water content, watermelon keeps you hydrated during the summer season. Watermelon is an ingredient which brings freshness in all kinds of meals. With its natural sweetness and great nutritional balance, you can make quick salads, smoothies and drinks. Since it goes well with veggies, fruits and herbs as well, it is a healthy addition in your cooking.”
Many say that watermelon is also an immunity booster which is why people are going for it. “When it is ripe, it has plenty of antioxidants called glutathione. It strengthens the immune system and the pulpy flesh near the rind has the maximum glutathione,” says chef Kanupriya Khanna.
