An FIR was lodged on Wednesday against the kin of a female patient and 12 others after they beat up hospital staff following her death.

This is the first such FIR against attendants of a Covid-19 patient, this year, in Lucknow. “The patient was admitted on May 22 with severe infection and the family was briefed about it. The death took place on May 25, after which the husband and 12 other people bashed up our staff including receptionist, staff nurses, ward boys and even a doctor on duty. The police was called but they just watched the entire incident as mute spectators,” said Dr Vinod Tiwari, head of Advanced

Neuro and General Hospital in Arjunganj.

Sunil Mishra, the husband of the deceased, who had been suffering from a severe chest infection, refuted the charges. “We did not misbehave. The police was there and had we been wrong, the police would not have allowed us to leave. We will fight a legal battle against the doctor who not only charged us exorbitantly but also did not arrange an ambulance to take the body back,” said Mishra, a resident of Ambedkarnagar.

Citing the incident, Tiwari gave a letter to the chief medical officer of Lucknow demanding his hospital be removed from the list of medical centres catering to Covid-19 patients. An FIR has been lodged with the

Sushant Golf City police station.

Based upon Tiwari’s complaint, the nodal officer for Covid-19 in Lucknow, Roshan Jacob, wrote a letter to the district magistrate and commissioner of police for action against the offenders and also wrote that if there is laxity by the hospital then action be taken against it, in accordance with the law.

Tiwari, who is treating Covid-19 patients, was the first to install an oxygen generation plant among private hospitals during the second wave. Dr Rama Sriavstava, president, IMA Lucknow and Dr JD Rawat, honorary secretary, have written a letter to the district magistrate demanding the defaulters be made to compensate for the damage to the hospital.
