The Centre is considering Pfizer’s request to grant the company indemnity from costs related to severe Covid-19 vaccine side-effects, Niti Aayog member (health) VK Paul said on Thursday, adding that doses may be procured as early as July.

The government later said it was waiving off the condition to carry out local trials for “well established” foreign vaccines. “Yes, we are in talks with Pfizer, since they indicated they have certain amount of vaccines available in the coming months — possibly starting in July,” Paul said.

“They have requested indemnity from all the nations, including the country of origin, US. We are examining this request and we will take decision in the larger interest of people and on merits. It’s under discussion but there is no decision as of now,” he added. Pfizer said it “remains committed to continuing our engagement” with the government.
