: The police rescued a doctor after an encounter with his kidnappers near Bilaridih village in Chandauli on Wednesday morning. Four kidnappers, including one injured in the incident, were arrested. A cop was also injured, said police.

Dr Amareshwar Kushwaha, a homeopath of Raia village was kidnapped by four criminals from near Phoolpur village around 9pm on May 31 when he was on his way home from his clinic. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs 70 lakh from his kin, said a police officer. After the doctor’s kin informed the police, IG (Varanasi range) SK Bhagat inspected the spot. On a tip-off, cops intensifie­d patrolling on the national highway near Bilaridih village.

The police signalled a car to stop for checking. As cops reached near the car, the occupants opened fire at them and the cops retaliated. After a brief encounter, the doctor was rescued.
