How to cut onions without crying?

There are multiple ways to avoid tearing up while cutting onions. You can try using a sharp knife as it will cause less damage to the cell walls of the onions, and fewer irritants will be released.

Keeping the exposed cuts away from you can also help. As soon as you cut an onion in half, turn both halves down on your cutting board. Leave the side you aren’t currently chopping unpeeled. Once you’ve finished with one half, move the diced onion into a prep bowl, and keep it away.

You can also soak the onions in cold water to chill the onion. This slows down the production of the chemicals.

Lastly, chew gum while chopping onions. That way you diffuse the odours that make you cry and breathe through your mouth, so the chemicals don’t make it to your nasal cavity, preventing any irritants from going up your nose.
