Husband, father-in-law held over dowry, triple talaq allegation

-

: The police on Friday arrested the husband and fatherin-law of a Bahraich woman who had filed a case of instant ‘triple talaq’ against them.

Riyaz, who works in Mumbai and is a resident of Bahraich’s Nanpara area, had divorced her wife only three months after the marriage as her parents failed to fulfill the dowry demand, said police officials. They got married on February 21.

A senior police official privy to the investigation said the woman is also the resident of Bahraich’s Rupahdiha area.

Riyaz and his family had demanded a motorcycle as dowry which was fulfilled by the woman’s family.

He said the woman alleged that Riyaz and his family members started demanding another motorcycle after two months and started torturing her.

He said the woman’s parents tried to settle down things through intervention of some common relatives, but things worsened and Riyaz gave her triple talaq and threw her out of the house on May 25.

“The woman’s family then approached senior district police officials and an FIR under charges of voluntarily causing hurt, dowry harassment as well as under sections of the Muslim Women (Protection of Right on Marriage) Bill 2019, which criminalizes instant ‘triple talaq’ among Muslims and attracts a jail term of three years for the husband, was lodged with Nanpara police station,” he said.

Sub-inspector of Nanpara police station, Manoj Kumar Rao said the FIR was lodged against Riyaz, his father Mushtakeem and two women members of their family. He said Riyaz and Mushtakeem had been arrested and sent to jail while investigation is on about the involvement of other people.
